If you loved my other earwarmer patterns, you will love this free pattern too. It’ll be part of a set {matching beanies (available already) and a cowl} so keep your eyes opened and check my site regularly for updates.

Say hello to the Goldberry Earwarmer, which is the matching pair of my other design, the Goldberry Beanie. You can buy the pattern HERE.

It’s a fun and easy pattern to use up some scrap aran/worsted yarn and it is easily adjustable to fit any size.

Difficulty:

Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Size:

One size only to fit an average adult’s head, but it can be easily adjusted to make a bigger or smaller size.

Materials needed:

  • 5 mm (H) Hook (Get great hooks HERE)
  • Approximately 91 yards / 83 meters (45 grams) of worsted/aran weight yarn (I used Paintbox Simply Aran, you can buy it HERE.)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain

ST/STS = stitch/stitches

SP = space

SK = skip

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

SC3LO = single crochet 3rd loop only

HDC = half double crochet

HDC3LO = half double crochet 3rd loop only

DC = double crochet

SW Puff ST = Sideways Puff Stitch

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols

Additional terms/ Special Stitches:

Stitches in the HDC 3rd loop only (HDC3LO):

Look at the top of the stitch and locate the sideways ”V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another ”V”. You will be working into the back loop of that ”V”. This creates a nice, braided look.

Sideways Puff Stitch (SWPuff ST):

Before you make a sideways puff stitch you always have 3 DC STS

Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch (this is going to be the ST you put the first DC into, the base of the first DC, NOT the DC itself!), pull up a long loop through that stitch/space (3 loops on hook)

(Yarn over hook again and insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through 8 loops, (2 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through both loops.

If you are more visual, here’s a photo tutorial with step by step photos:

Gauge: 4 HDC = 1”

Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1 or Chain 2, that is not counted as a stitch.
  • Slip stitch doesn’t count as a stitch.
  • US terms used throughout
  • You can easily resize the earwarmer:

 to make it bigger just add 4 more or a multiple of 4 chains to the staring chain

OR

to make it smaller, simply take 4 or multiples of 4 chains from the starting chain

  • When you’re about to work in a stitch with a stitch marker in it, just simply take it out, I won’t include a separate note for that J
  • Notes are written in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.

Instructions

To start: CH 72, SLST to first CH, make sure you don’t twist it when joining

Round 1: CH 1, 1 HDC in same CH (put a stitch marker in the first HDC of the round and in the 3rd loop of that very same ST, this will help in the next round), 1 HDC in each CH around, join with a SLST to first HDC

(72 HDC)

Round 2: CH 1, 1 HDC3LO in same ST, 1 HDC3LO in each ST around, join with a SLST to first HDC

 (72 HDC)

Round 3: CH 2, 1 DC in the same ST, 1 DC in next 2 STS, 1 SW Puff ST into the ST you just put your first DC into (check the photo tutorial if unsure), SK 1 ST (make sure you skip the right ST, as all of the 3 DC STS  are a bit pulled to the side under the SW Puff ST) * 1 DC in next 3 STS, 1 SW Puff ST into the first DC ST, SK 1 ST* repeat *to* around, join with a SLST to first DC

(18 SW Puffs, 54 DC)

Round 4: CH 1, 1 SC in same ST, 1 SC in each ST around, join with a SLST to first SC

(72 HDC)

Round 11: CH 1, 1 SC3LO in same ST, 1 SC3LO in each ST around, join with a SLST to first SC

  1. Do you have a video of the Sc3lo? I’m not sure what you mean by 3rd loop without seeing it…are you referring to the back loop? I really like the pattern so don’t want to give up on it yet!
    Thank you!
