Difficulty:                           Beginner

Finished Size:                   158 cm/62.25” long

                                               44 cm/17.25” wide

Gauge:                 Unimportant, as your garment will be blocked upon finishing to the size given

Materials needed:

• 3.5 mm (E) size hook (You can buy some great ones HERE)
• 1 Scheepjes Whirl or approximately 1093 yards/1000 meters of fingering weight yarn
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors
• Stitch markers

Stitches Used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain

SK = skip

ST/STS= stitch/ stitches

SC = single crochet

DC = double crochet

TR = treble crochet

3DCCL = 3 double crochet cluster

V ST= V stitch

Cluster V ST = 3 double crochet cluster V stitch

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols (This is only used for a full repeat, may contain smaller repeats)

{} =indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions between these brackets the number of times given

[] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given

Special Stitches:

3 Double Crochet Cluster (3DCCL):

1. Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, leave the stitch unfinished. (2 loops on hook)
2. Yarn over, insert hook in same indicated stitch/space, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, leave the stitch unfinished. (3 loops on hook)
3. Yarn over, insert hook in same indicated stitch/space, yarn over, pull, through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

V Stitch (V ST):

Double crochet in indicated stitch/space, chain 2, double crochet in same stitch.

Cluster V ST (Cluster V ST):

3 DCCL in indicated stitch/space, chain 2, 3 DCCL in same stitch/space.

Additional notes:

• If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, it is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
• CH 2 always counts as double crochet
• Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
• US terms used throughout
• Remember to turn your work after each row
• Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
• NOTE: Blocking is essential to enhance the lace patternwork of your shawl and to ensure that your edges are straight

Instructions

Important: Before you start, take off 10 grams (if you crochet loosely, you can take off 12-15 grams) from the beginning of the skein, which will be used to make the border at this end of the shawl (I will refer to this as leftover yarn 1)

To start: CH 106

Row 1: 1 SC in 2^nd CH from hook, 1 SC in each CH to end

TURN

Row 2: {CH 2+2DCCL= 3DCCL} in same ST, SK 3 STS, Cluster V ST in next ST, SK 3 STS, {V ST in next ST, SK 3 STS, Cluster V ST in next ST, SK 3 STS} 12 times, 3 DCCL in last ST

TURN

(2 x 3DCCL, 13 x Cluster V ST, 12 x V ST)

Row 3: {CH 2+2DCCL= 3DCCL} in same ST, V ST in next CH 2 SP (CH 2 SP of Cluster V ST), {Cluster V ST in next CH 2 SP (CH 2 SP of V ST), V ST in next CH 2 SP (CH 2 SP of Cluster V ST)} 12 times, 3DCCL in last ST (3DCCL)

Row 5: CH 4 (counts as TR), 1 DC in 2^nd CH of CH 3 SP (Note: you can alternatively just put the DC ST in the CH 3 SP without stitching into the CH) , CH 2, {1 SC, CH3, 1 SC, CH 5, 1 SC, CH 3, 1 SC} (I’ll refer to these as Motifs) in next CH 3 SP between 3DCCL STS, CH 2, [DC2tog by placing the first DC in the 2^nd CH of next CH 3 SP, and placing the second DC in the 2^nd CH of next CH 3 SP (Note: if you have a hard time to put the stitches into the chains, you can alternatively just put the stitches in the CH 3 spaces), CH 2, {1 SC, CH3, 1 SC, CH 5, 1 SC, CH 3, 1 SC} in next CH 3 SP between 3DCCL STS, CH 2] 12 times, 1 DC in 2^nd CH of last CH 3 SP, 1 TR in last ST (SC)
