Difficulty: Intermediate
Finished Size: 48 cm/ 19” wide
155 cm/ 61” long
Materials needed:
- 3.5 mm (E) size hook (I used Iris Odyssey by Furls)
- NOTE: If you crochet loosely I advise you to use a 3 mm (5/0) size hook
- 1 Scheepjes Whirl (I used Shrinking Violet shade) and 1/4 Whirlette (I used Parma Violet Shade)
or approximately 1220 yards/ 1115 meters of fingering weight yarn
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Yarn winder
- Digital Scale
- Stitch markers (optional)
Stitches Used and Abbreviations:
CH = chain
SK = skip
ST/STS= stitch/ stitches
RS = right side
WS = wrong side
SC = single crochet
BPHDC = back post half double crochet
TR = treble crochet
4TRCL = four treble cluster
DTR = double treble crochet
{ } =indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions between these brackets the number of times given
[ ] = used to repeat a medium length set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given
[ ] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given
Special Stitches:
Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC):
Yarn over, insert your hook from back to front around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your half double crochet as usual.
4 Treble Cluster (4TRCL):
- Yarn over twice, insert hook into given stitch/space, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, leave the stitch unfinished (2 loops on hook)
- Yarn over twice, insert hook into the same stitch/space, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, leave the stitch unfinished 3 more times (5 loops on hook)
- Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops.
Gauge: 5 SC STS = 1″ / 2.5 cm
Additional notes:
- If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, that is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
- Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
- US terms used throughout.
- At the end of every round, there’s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. It’s written in a different color in bold
- Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
- You can start each row as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, it’s totally up to you!
- You can easily adjust the width of you shawl: the starting chain should be multiples of 10+9 chains
- NOTE: Blocking is essential to enhance the lace patternwork of your shawl and to ensure that your edges are straight
Instructions
Important: Before you start, weigh your whirl (Pic 1), then create two even halves. I used a wool winder for this purpose. I started to wind up my cake from the inside and when I got halfway (I weighed my whirl to ensure the measurements are right) I cut the yarn, took it off the winder and rewound it from the outside. This way, the end which I just cut remained in the inside of my new cake. Then, I wound my remaining whirl up from the inside. By doing this, the two ends of the two new little cakes were the same shade and I have kept the color gradient effect. (Pic 2)
