This pattern is close to my heart as I designed it for my uncle’s wife’s 50th birthday, as a unique gift. I wanted to make something quick, yet beautifully textured and elegant. She loves yellow and red shades so the yarn cake I had in my stash was perfect for it.

Difficulty: Intermediate/Advanced
Size: 150 cm/59” long
44 cm/17.5” wide AFTER BLOCKING
Materials needed:
- 3.5 mm (E) size hook (I used Furls Alpha Series-Cocobolo get it HERE)
- NOTE: If you crochet loosely I advise you to use a 3 mm (5/0) size hook
- 1 Scheepjes Whirl or approximately 1094 yards/1000 meters of fingering weight yarn (I used Scheepjes Whirl in Fruity ’O’ Tutty)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Stitch markers (optional)
- NOTE: Blocking is essential to enhance the lace patternwork of your shawl and to ensure that your edges are straight
Stitches Used and Abbreviations:
CH = chain
SK = skip
ST/STS= stitch/ stitches
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
Puff ST = puff stitch
{ } =indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions between these brackets the number of times given
[ ] = used to repeat a medium length set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given
[ ] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given
Special Stitches:
Puff Stitch (Puff ST):
- Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, pull up a long loop through that stitch (3 loops on hook)
- Yarn over hook again, insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. (Picture 1.)
- Yarn over and pull through 8 loops, (2 loops remain on your hook) (Picture 2.)
- Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops. (Picture 3-4.)
(This way, you will only have 1 loop on top of the puff stitches, instead of 2)

Gauge: 5 double crochet stitches = 1″ / 2.5cm
Additional notes:
- If a row/round starts with a Chain 1 that is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
- Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
- CH 2 always counts as double crochet.

- From Row 2, I’ve written the instructions in sections. I’ll refer to these sections in the repeats further on in the pattern (e.g. repeat section 1)
- At the end of every row, there’s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. It’s written in a different color in bold
- Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
- You can start each row as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, it’s totally up to you!
- NOTE: Blocking is essential to enhance the lace patternwork of your shawl and to ensure that your edges are straight

Important: Before you start, take off 10-12 grams (if you crochet loosely, you can take off 12-15 grams) from the beginning of the skein, which will be used to make the border at this end of the shawl (I will refer to this as leftover yarn 1)
