Helina Snowflake

A gorgeous and beautifully textured snowflake pattern which is very quick to make!

As itโ€™s nearly Christmas, a lot of you are looking for nice and easy star/snowflake patterns.

I create a new pattern every year and to be honest, it became a little tradition now! โ„๏ธ

The Helina Snowflake is a nice little gift for Christmas and a great stocking filler too.
It can be used as a decoration, just make a bunch of them or create a garland and hang it on the wall, the possibilities are endless! ๐Ÿ™‚

Special thanks to my testers: Cheryl Freeman and Rebecca Urrutia

Difficulty:                     Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Finished Size:               12 cm/ 5โ€ on widest point

  • 4 mm (G) size hook
  • 13 metres/15 yards (5 grams) of DK weight cotton yarn (I used Scheepjes Twinkle in different shades)
  • NOTE: If you crochet loosely I advise you to use a 3.5 mm (E) size hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional)

MR = magic ring

CH = chain

ST/STS = stitch/stitches

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

DC = double crochet

Puff ST = puff stitch

S Picot ST = small picot stitch

L Picot ST = large picot stitch

{ } =indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions between these brackets the number of times given

[ ] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given

(This is only used for a full repeat, may contain smaller repeats)

Gauge:            not critical for this project but may affect the yarn quantities required

Special Stitches:

Puff Stitch (Puff ST):

(Video help: https://youtube.com/shorts/l88IFzgyiJI?si=0XschebILtrWYhPk)

  1. Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, pull up a long loop through that stitch (3 loops on hook)
  2. Yarn over hook again, insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. (Pic 1)
  3. Yarn over and pull through 6 loops. (2 loops remain on your hook) (Pic 2)
  4. Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops. (Pics 3-4)

(This way, you will only have 1 loop on top of the puff stitches, instead of 2)

Small Picot Stitch (S Picot ST):

CH 2, slip stitch back in first chain.

Large Picot Stitch (L Picot ST):

CH 4, slip stitch back in first chain.

  • Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, this is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
  • US terms used throughout.
  • At the end of every round, thereโ€™s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. Itโ€™s written in a different color in bold.
  • Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
  • You can start each round as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, itโ€™s totally up to you!

To start: MR

Round 1: CH 1, 12 DC into the MR, tighten the ring, then join with a SLST to first DC

or instead of a magic ring:
