Get ready to shine bright with the #BeYourOwnStarCAL! 🌟

Hobbii reached out to me to be the creative mind behind their upcoming Crochet-Along (CAL), and I couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with them!

In this CAL, I will be sharing my love for shawls (I have quite a few shawl designs as you know) and textured designs which is my signature touch in my patterns. You’ll create a unique half-star shawl, learn fun stitches, and connect with fellow crocheters in the online community.

The #BeYourOwnStarCAL kicks off on March 19th. Ready to join in on the fun? Grab your kit right HERE!

1. A bit more info about the #BeYourOwnStar CAL

The idea for the name came from the crochet community itself. We’re all individual stars in this little universe—each different, yet connected by our shared love for crochet.

The shape of the shawl makes it stand out and ties into the overall message. It’s not a triangle; it’s more of a star shape—a half-star shape, to be precise. This unique design gives it a better drape and makes it stand out from the crowd. It’s not something you see every day. And, along with the shape, the texture is very special too.

2. The texture and the stitches

I wanted to keep the design as simple as possible while adding some texture. I used some of my favourite stitches: popcorn and puff stitches.

I didn’t want to use so many different stitches in one section so I tried spreading them out to keep everything balanced and I think it worked quite well.

For the edging, I added a picot border which is simple but adds a unique touch. A detail like that can really make the whole project stand out. Simple is better sometimes, right?

3. My design process

I am very oldschool: I always use a notebook to write my patterns up while crocheting. When designing this shawl, the first part went smoothly, but the second part didn’t turn out as I had imagined. I tried a few rows, wasn’t happy with it, and put it aside in the ‘naughty corner’ for a break for a few days. I kept thinking about how should I change the pattern to get it work and when the idea hit, I ripped it out and started fresh. Sometimes stepping away helps me find a new perspective.

4. Skill level

The skill level is intermediate because of all the different stitches used (front/back post stitches, puff and popcorn stitches and some extended stitches too) but if you are an adventurous beginner you can join us too as the pattern will be available as a photo tutorial with step-by-step photos and a full video tutorial will be availabe on YouTube as well. My advice is to practice these stitches before the CAL and you should be fine.

5. My yarn choice

I really wanted something colorful but lightweight for this design so it would be suitable for spring. That’s why my choice was a colorful yarn paired with a solid color so that pairing would really make the texture and the colors pop!

6. Why should you join this CAL?

If you know me and my designs, you should know by now that the pattern won’t be boring at all! Each and almost every row is going to be different and it will be so much fun to learn all of the stitches and techniques I included in this design. Plus you will get a gorgeus shawl at the end as a result!

7. My advice for this project:

For beginners, I recommend practicing the special stitches and techniques listed above before starting. The video tutorial will be a huge help for you, I’m sure!

For intermediate crocheters: Keep an eye on your stitch counts. It’s easy to miss a stitch, and even I made mistakes while designing and had to frog a few rows.

And for advanced crocheters: Don’t forget to block the shawl when it’s finished. Blocking is essential—it helps settle the stitches, enhances the drape, and can even increase the size of the shawl. Mine got bigger by about 10-12 centimeters.

I am so excited about this new CAL and I really hope that you’ll join me and crochet this fabulous shawl together! I can’t wait to see everyone’s progress and feedback!
