Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a CH 1, CH 2 or CH 3, that is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
  • US terms used throughout.
  • At the end of every row, thereโ€™s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. Itโ€™s written in a different color in bold. For the border round, I included a stitch count per short/long side (excluding corner stitches) and per corner too, in case you prefer it that way.
  • Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern or tell you which stitches to work into or skip.
  • You can start each row as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, itโ€™s totally up to you!
  • You can easily adjust the width of your placemat: the starting chain should be multiples of 3+5 chains.

To start: CH 56

Row 1: 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook, (Note: you can work into the back bumps of your chains if you prefer) 1 SC in each CH to end

Row 2: CH 1, 1 DC in same ST, SK 2 STS, [Cluster V ST in next ST , SK 2 STS] 17 times , 1 DC in last ST

Row 3: CH 1, 1 DC in same ST (alternatively, you can CH 2/3 or use the stacked single crochet method. Video help on this method: https://youtube.com/shorts/_OhMrRY-FLA?si=mBhWIT-dIGd1k-ZT) 1 Cluster V ST in each CH 1 SP to end, 1 DC in last ST

Rows 4-17: Repeat Row 3.

Row 18: (Note: in this row you put 2 SC in the first and last CH 1 SP, the other CH 1 spaces have only 1 SC!) CH 1, 1 SC in same ST, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 2 SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), [1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 1 SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL)] 15 times, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 2 SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 1 SC in last ST

Fasten off.

Round 1: Join yarn with a standing SC (Video help: https://youtu.be/U8_NjvR30vs?si=YDLHbnS-mMGq-zjX) in the first ST of last Row (Top right corner), {CH 2, 1 SC} in same ST, 1 SC in next 53 STS, {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC} in next ST, SC 32 evenly on short side, {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC} in next ST, 1 SC in next 53 STS, {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC} in next ST, SC 32 evenly on short side, join with a SLST to first SC

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends and block your finished placemat if desired.
