This easy, small project is really good for stash busting and using up some scrap yarn. Any 100% DK Aran/Worsted weight yarn is suitable for it.

Difficulty: Easy/ Intermediate
Size: 11 cm / 4.33” wide on the widest point
Materials needed:
- 5 mm (H) size Hook (Get great hooks HERE)
- 11 grams (19 meters / 21 yards) of any 100% cotton aran/worsted yarn ( I used Drops Loves You 8 in different shades)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Stitches used and Abbreviations:
MR = magic ring
CH = chain
SK = skip
ST/STS= stitch/ stitches
SLST = slip stitch
FPSC = front post single crochet
DC = double crochet
HDC = half double crochet
FPHDC = front post half double crochet
FPDC = front post double crochet
Puff ST = puff stitch
*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols
Special Stitches:
Front Post Single Crochet:
Insert your hook from the front around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your single crochet as usual.
Front Post Half Double Crochet:
Yarn over, insert your hook from the front around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your half double crochet as usual.
Front Post Double Crochet:
Yarn over, insert your hook from the front around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your double crochet as usual.
Puff Stitch:
Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, pull up a long loop through that stitch/space (3 loops on hook) Yarn over hook again and insert hook into the same stitch/space, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on your hook, chain 1 to close the puff stitch.
Gauge: not needed
Additional notes:
- Each round starts with a Chain 1 or 2 ; These are not counted as a stitch.
- US terms used throughout
- When you make a puff stitch, it creates 2 loops on its top. I will refer to these loops as first loop and second loop. The first loop is always the one on the right and the second one is on the left.
- Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern or state someting which can be unclear at first read
Instructions:
To Start: MR
Round 1: CH 1, 8 Puff ST in MR, join with a SLST to first loop of first Puff ST
(8 Puff STS)
Round 2: CH 1, 1 HDC in same ST (this is the first loop of the first Puff ST), 1 HDC in 2nd loop of Puff ST, 1 FPHDC around the same Puff ST, *1 HDC in 1st loop of next Puff ST, 1 HDC in 2nd loop of the same Puff ST, 1 FPHDC around the same Puff ST* repest *to* to end, join with a SLST to first HDC
(8 FPHDC, 16 HDC)
Round 3: CH 2 (this does not count as a ST) 1 DC in same ST, CH 2, SK 1 ST (this is a HDC from the previous round), 1 DC in next ST (this is a FPHDC from previous round), * 1 DC in next ST (this is a HDC from the previous round), CH 2, SK 1 ST, (this is a HDC from the previous round), 1 DC in next ST (this is a FPHDC from previous round)* repeat * to* to end, join with a SLST to first DC NOT the CH 2
(16 DC, 8 CH 2 SP)
Round 4: SLST to 2nd loop of Puff ST, SLST to CH 2 SP, CH 1, *1 Puff ST, CH 1, 1 Puff ST in CH 2 SP, 1 FPDC around the 2 DC STS of previous round* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to 1st loop of the first Puff ST (note: when you do the last FPDC of the round, you have to do it around the 2 DC STS and the CH 2, which is between them)
(16 Puff STS, 8 CH 1 SP, 8 FPDC)
Round 5: SLST to 2nd loop of Puff ST, SLST to CH 1 SP between the 2 Puff STS, CH 3, 6 DC in same SP, SK next Puff ST, 1 FPSC around the FPDC from previous round, SK next Puff ST, *7 DC in CH 1 SP between the Puff STS, SK next Puff ST, 1 FPSC around the FPDC from previous round, SK next Puff ST* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to top of CH 3
(8 Shells, 8 FPSC)
Fasten off, weave in all ends.
