Goldberry Coffee Cup Cozy

Blog post may contain affiliate links. Using the links I provide does not cost you anything additional.

I love cup cozies as they are fun to make and add a little personality to your travel cup. They are easy to make and perfect for a last minute gift too! This one is using the same stitches as my Goldberry Beanie and Goldberry Earwarmer so you can make a great MATCHING SET! Isn’t it lovely?

This pattern and photographs are the property of K.A.M.E. Crochet by Krisztina Anna Matejcsok-Edomer and are for personal and non-commercial use. You may not alter or sell this pattern in any way. You may sell finished products, but please credit K.A.M.E. Crochet if you can. Thank you!

Difficulty:           Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Size:                    To fit a 12 oz. /340 ml travel coffee cup

Materials needed:

  • 5 mm (H) size hook (Get great hooks HERE)
  • approx. 18-20 grams (31-34 meters/33.5-37 yards) of any 100% cotton, aran/worsted weight yarn (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in Rose Red)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain

ST/STS = stitch/stitches

SP = space

SK = skip

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

SC3LO = single crochet 3rd loop only

HDC = half double crochet

DC = double crochet

SW Puff ST = Sideways Puff Stitch

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols

Additional terms/ Special Stitches:

Stitches in the HDC 3rd loop only (SC3LO):

Look at the top of the stitch and locate the sideways ”V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another ”V”. You will be working into the back loop of that ”V”. This creates a nice, braided look.

Sideways Puff Stitch (SWPuff ST):

Before you make a sideways puff stitch you always have 3 DC STS first.

Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch (this is going to be the ST you put the first DC into, the base of the first DC, NOT the DC itself!), pull up a long loop through that stitch/space (3 loops on hook)

Yarn over hook again and insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through 8 loops, (2 loops remained on your hook), yarn over and pull through both loops.

If you are more visual, here’s a photo tutorial with step by step photos:

Gauge: 4 HDC = 1”

Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1 or Chain 2, that is not counted as a stitch.
  • Slip stitch doesn’t count as a stitch.
  • US terms used throughout
  • You can easily resize the cup cozy:

 to make it bigger just add 4 more or a multiple of 4 chains to the staring chain

OR

to make it smaller, simply take 4 or multiples of 4 chains from the starting chain

  • When you’re about to work in a stitch with a stitch marker in it, just simply take it out, I won’t include a separate note for that J
  • Notes are written in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.

Round 1: CH 1, 1 HDC in same CH (put a stitch marker in the first HDC of the round and in the 3rd loop of that very same ST, this will help in the next round), 1 HDC in each CH around, join with a SLST to first HDC

(32 HDC)

Round 2: CH 1, 1 SC3LO in same ST, 1 SC3LO in each ST around, join with a SLST to first HDC

(8 SW Puffs, 24 DC)

Round 4: CH 1, 1 SC in same ST, 1 SC in each ST around, join with a SLST to first SC
