Aina Blanket

This pattern is one of my favourites as I designed it for my sister’s baby girl (who’s due in any minute as I write this), as a unique gift. I wanted to make something quick, yet beautifully textured but not holey. She loves pastel and soft shades so the yarn cake I had in my stash was perfect for it.

Some of you might remember these stitches as they were used in Anna’s Tales CAL-Part 3, I’ve just done some alterations so I was able to start it from the middle. 🙂

As this is a simple, 2 row pattern repeat, you can stop at any time and make it as big or small as you like! 🙂

Enjoy my newest design, which is quite easy and fast to make!

Difficulty:                          Advanced Beginner

Finished Size:                   100 cm x 100 cm / 39″ x 39″ AFTER BLOCKING

Materials needed:

  • 3.75 mm (F) size hook (I used Furls Alpha Series-Blackwood, get it HERE)
  • 2 Scheepjes Whirls or approximately 2188 yards/2000 meters of fingering weight yarn (I used Scheepjes Whirl in Popin Candy)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • NOTE: Blocking is essential to enhance the textured patternwork of your blanket

Stitches Used and Abbreviations:

MR = magic ring

CH = chain

SK = skip

ST/STS= stitch/ stitches

SC = single crochet

DC = double crochet

Puff ST = puff stitch

{ } =indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions

between these brackets the number of times given

[ ] = used to repeat a medium length set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given

 [ ] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given

Special Stitches:

Puff Stitch (Puff ST):

  1. Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, pull up a long loop through that stitch (3 loops on hook)
  2. Yarn over hook again, insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. (Picture 1.)
  3. Yarn over and pull through 8 loops, (2 loops remain on your hook) (Picture 2.)
  4. Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops. (Picture 3-4.)

(This way, you will only have 1 loop on top of the puff stitches, instead of 2)

1.

2.

3.

4.

Gauge:   5 double crochet stitches = 1″ / 2.5cm

Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1 or 2, this is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
  • Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
  • US terms used throughout.
  • At the end of every round, there’s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. It’s written in a different color; the first line in bold is always the total stitch count for the round (starting with Round 2, this excludes corner stitches). Below that, I included a stitch count per side (excluding corner stitches) and per corner too, in case you prefer it that way.
  • When working on the corners, always remember that there might be a hidden stitch hiding under the corner stitches which is the first stitch of the previous row
  • Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.

  1. Lovely! But I can’t find the the “next page” for the border instructions. My error, I’m sure.

  2. I really love this pattern. This is just beautiful. I wonder if I could start it the same way, but then change it to go back/forth to make a rectangle shawl? I think it would work, but…😬
