Sakura Washcloth

If you liked my Sakura Face Scrubbies pattern, here’s a matching washcloth pattern.

This design is using front post and back post stitches combined with puff stitches to create a nice textured look with my signature sakura motif in the centre. If you liked my Sakura Face Scrubbies pattern, here’s a matching washcloth pattern.

Difficulty: Advanced beginner/ Intermediate

Size: 9.5” x 9.5” / 24.5 cm x 24.5 cm

Materials needed:

  • 4 mm (G) size Hook
  • approx.  55-60 grams (110-120 metres / 120-131 yards) of any 100% cotton DK yarn desired (I used Oxford Yarns Eco Cotton in Light Blue {Color 1} and in White {Color 2})
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

MR = magic ring         

CH = chain

SK = skip

ST/STS= stitch/ stitches

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

BPSC = back post single crochet

HDC = half double crochet

BPHDC = back post half double crochet

DC = double crochet

FPDC = front post double crochet

BPDC = back post double crochet

TR = treble crochet

PUFF ST = Puff stitch

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols

Special Stitches:

Front Post Double Crochet:

Yarn over, insert your hook from the front around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your double crochet as usual.

Back Post Single Crochet:

Insert your hook from the back around the post of given stitch, yarn over and finish your single crochet as usual.

Back Post Half Double Crochet:

Yarn over, insert your hook from the back around the post of given stitch, yarn over and finish your half double crochet as usual.

Back Post Double Crochet:

Yarn over, insert your hook from the back around the post of given stitch, yarn over and finish your double crochet as usual.

Puff Stitch:

Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, pull up a long loop through that stitch/space (3 loops on hook) Yarn over hook again and insert hook into the same stitch/space, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on your hook, chain 1 to close the puff stitch.

Gauge: 4 DC and 3 rows = 1”

Additional notes:

  • US terms used throughout
  • Each round starts with a Chain 1, 2 or 3. These are not counted as a stitch unless instructed otherwise
  • If your washcloth is wavy a bit after you completed it, I advise to lightly block it to stop curling

To start: MR

Round 1: CH 3, DC 12 into the ring, join with a SLST to first DC (not CH 3) 

(12 DC)

Round 2: CH 2, 1 DC in same ST, FPDC around the CH 3 from previous round and the same ST you just put a DC into, *1DC in next ST, FPDC around the same ST* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to first DC                                                                                           

(12 FPDC, 12 DC)

Round 3: CH 2, 1 DC in same ST, 1 DC in next ST (that’s the first FPDC from previous round), FPDC around the same ST you just put a DC into, *1 DC in next 2 STS (note: the 2nd ST is always the FPDC), FPDC around FPDC* repeat *to* to end join with a SLST to first DC                             

(12 FPDC, 24 DC)

Round 4: SLST to first FPDC from prevoius round, CH 1, SC in same ST, SK 2 STS (those are the 2 DC from prev. round) 7 DC in next FPDC, *SK 2 STS, SC in next FPDC , SK 2 STS, 7 DC in next FPDC* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to first SC                                                                               

(6 SC, 6  Petals of 7 DC)

Fasten off.

Round 5: Change colour, join Color 2 in any SC from previous round.

CH 1, 1 PUFF ST in the same ST, 1 BPHDC in next 2 STS, 1 BPSC in next 3 STS, 1 BPHDC in next 2 STS, *1 PUFF ST in next ST (note: that’s a SC from previous round), 1 BPHDC in next 2 STS, 1 BPSC in next 3 STS, 1 BPHDC in next 2 STS* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to first PUFF ST

(6 PUFF ST, 24 BPHDC, 18 BPSC)

Round 6: CH 1, *1 FPDC around the PUFF ST, 1 HDC in next 2 STS, 1 SC in next 3 STS, 1 HDC in next 2 STS* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to first FPDC

(6 FPDC, 24 HDC, 18 SC)

Round 7: SLST to the next ST, SLST to next ST, SLST to next ST (note: that’s the 3rd ST to the left of the first FPDC from the previous round) CH 3 (counts as DC), 1 TR, 1 DC in same ST (corner), 1 DC in next 2 STS,  1 HDC in next 2 STS, 1 SC in next 3 STS, 1 HDC in next 2 STS, 1 DC in next 2 STS, *1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC in next ST (corner), 1 DC in next 2 STS,  1 HDC in next 2 STS, 1 SC in next 3 STS, 1 HDC in next 2 STS, 1 DC in next 2 STS* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to top of CH 3

(4 TR, 24 DC, 16 HDC, 12 SC)

Round 8: SLST to next ST (that’s the TR from previous round), CH 1, *1 PUFF ST, CH 2, 1 PUFF ST in same ST (corner), 1 DC in next 4 STS, 1 FPDC in next ST, SK 1 ST, 2 PUFF STS in next ST, SK 1 ST, 1 FPDC in next ST, 1 DC in next 4 STS* repeat *to* to end , join with a SLST to first PUFF ST

(8x 2 PUFF ST, 32 DC, 8 FPDC, 4x CH 2 SP)

Round 9: CH 2, *1 FPDC around the PUFF ST from previous round, 1 PUFF ST, CH 2, 1 PUFF ST in CH 2 corner SP(corner), 1 FPDC around PUFF ST from previous round, 1 DC in next 4 STS, 1 FPDC in next ST, 2 PUFF STS between the 2 PUFFS from previous round, 1 FPDC in next ST, 1 DC in next 4 STS* repeat *to* to end , join with a SLST to first FPDC (not CH 2)

(8x 2 PUFF ST, 32 DC, 16 FPDC, 4x CH 2 SP)

Round 10: CH 2, *1 FPDC around FPDC, 1 FPDC around the PUFF ST from previous round, 1 PUFF ST, CH 2, 1 PUFF ST in CH 2 corner SP(corner), 1 FPDC around PUFF ST from previous round, 1 FPDC in next ST, 1 DC in next 4 STS, 1 FPDC in next ST, 2 PUFF STS between the 2 PUFFS from previous round, 1 FPDC in next ST, 1 DC in next 4 STS* repeat *to* to end , join with a SLST to first FPDC (not CH 2)

Round 14: SLST to next ST, SLST to CH 2 corner SP, CH 3 (counts as DC), 1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in same SP (corner), 1 DC in each ST to next corner, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in CH 2 corner SP (corner), 1 DC in each ST to next corner* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to top of CH 3

(124 DC, 4x CH 2 SP)

Round 14: SLST to next ST, SLST to CH 2 corner SP, CH 3 (counts as DC), 1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in same SP (corner), 1 DC in each ST to next corner, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in CH 2 corner SP (corner), 1 DC in each ST to next corner* repeat *to* to end, join with a SLST to top of CH 3

(140 DC, 4x CH 2 SP)

Fasten off, weave in all ends, block if desired.
