I absolutely love designing market/tote bags as I love using them myself. Not just because it’s eco-friendly but it looks super cute too! So enjoy my newest design, I hope you’ll find it as useful as me.

This pattern and photographs are the property of K.A.M.E. Crochet by Krisztina Anna Matejcsok-Edomer and are for personal and non-commercial use. You may not alter or sell this pattern in any way. You may sell finished products, but please credit K.A.M.E. Crochet if you can. Thank you!

Difficulty:

Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Size:

The body of the bag: 12”/30.5 cm wide ans 14,5”/37 cm tall

Handles: 18”/46 cm long and 1,25”/3 cm wide

Materials needed:

  • 5 mm (H) Hook
  • Color 1: 211 yards / 194 meters (125 grams)

and

Color 2: 118 yards / 109 meters (70 grams) of worsted/aran weight 100% cotton yarn {I used Paintbox Yarns 100% Recycled Cotton Worsted in Meadow Green (Color 1) and Peachy (Color 2)}

or alternatively you can use any other aran/worsted 100% cotton yarn

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain

ST/STS = stitch/stitches

SM = stitch marker

SP = space

SK = skip

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

HDC = half double crochet

HDC3LO = half double crochet 3rd loop only

FPHDC = front post half double crochet

DC = double crochet

2 DCCL = 2 double crochet cluster

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols

Special Stitches:

Stitches in the HDC 3rd loop only (HDC3LO):

Look at the top of the stitch and locate the sideways ”V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another ”V”. You will be working into the back loop of that ”V”. This creates a nice, braided look.

Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC):

Yarn over, insert your hook from front to back around the post of given stitch, from right to left, yarn over and finish your half double crochet as usual.

2 Double Crochet Cluster (2 DCCL):

Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, from right to left, yarn over, pull through 2 loops and leave the stitch unfinished. Yarn over hook again, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through 3 loops.

Gauge:

4 SC and 4 Rows = 1” (2.5 cm)

Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, it is not counted as a stitch, unless stated otherwise.
  • Slip stitches do not count as stitches.
  • CH 2 or CH 3 always count as DC
  • US terms used throughout
  • Notes are written in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
  • When you’re about to work in a stitch with a stitch marker in it, just simply take it out, I won’t include a separate note for that J
