Say hello to the Crossrows Beanie, perfect for the chilly and windy weather! The name of the design comes from the stitches I used to create the pattern and I was playing with the words to come up with a fun and easy-to-remember name.
If you like earwarmers, it has a matching earwarmer. Get the pattern HERE.
It’s a fun and easy pattern to use up some aran/worsted yarn from your stash and the sizing options give you a wide range to choose from.
You can download an AD FREE printable version of this pattern for a small fee in my Ravelry store HERE. If you prefer Etsy, you can get it HERE.

Difficulty:
Easy/Advanced Beginner
Size:
This pattern has instructions for 6 sizes, starting from 6-12 months size to adult size (the adult size and child size has 2 different sizing options)
Materials needed:
- 5 mm (H) Hook
- Approximately 85-155 yards / 77-143 meters (42-80 grams) of worsted/aran weight yarn (I used Paintbox Simply Aran), depending on the size chosen:
- 6-12 months: 42-45 grams
- Toddler: 45-50 grams
- Child: 55-60 grams
- Adult: 60-80 grams
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Optional: Faux fur or traditional pompom
- Stitch markers
Stitches used and Abbreviations:
CH = chain
ST/STS = stitch/stitches
SP = space
SK = skip
SLST = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
SCBLO =single crochet back loop only
HDC = half double crochet
HDC3LO = half double crochet 3rd loop only
HDC3LO2tog = 2 half double crochet sts in 3rd loop only together
DC = double crochet
*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols
Additional terms/ Special Stitches:
Stitches in the HDC 3rd loop only (HDC3LO):
Look at the top of the stitch and locate the sideways ”V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another ”V”. You will be working into the back loop of that ”V”. This creates a nice, braided look.
Gauge:
4 HDC = 1”
Additional notes:
- If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, that is not counted as a stitch.
- Slip stitch doesn’t count as a stitch.
- Chain 3 always count as double crochet
- US terms used throughout
- The hat is made from the bottom to top, starting with the brim which is worked in rows. The main body of the beanie is worked in rounds.
- When you’re about to work in a stitch with a stitch marker in it, just simply take it out, I won’t include a separate note for that J
- Notes are written in (brackets) to help you through the pattern.
- You can start each round as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, it’s totally up to you!
