UPDATE 1: If you are more visual, my friend, Karen, made a video tutorial to help you all! You can find all of the videos HERE.

UPDATE 2: The pattern is also available in hungarian if you click on the next page at the bottom (A minta magyarul is elérhető, ha a poszt alján, az angol nyelvű leírás után a következő oldalra kattintasz)

Difficulty:

Advaced beginner/Intermediate

Size:

One size only  to fit an average adult’s head, but it can be easily changed to make a bigger or smaller size.

Materials needed:

  • 5 mm (H) Hook
  • Approximately 65 yards / 30 grams of worsted/aran weight yarn (I used Stylecraft Special Aran)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain

ST = stitch

SP = space

SK = skip

SLST = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

SC3LO = single crochet 3rd loop only

HDC = half double crochet

HDC3LO = half double crochet 3rd loop only

DC = double crochet

Puff Stitch = Puff ST

*-* =repeat pattern between these symbols

Additional terms/ Special Stitches:

Stitching in the 3rd loop only of HDC:

Look at the top of the stitch and locate the sideways ”V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another ”V”. You will be working into the back loop of that ”V”. This creates a nice, braided look.

Puff Stitch:

Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, pull up a long loop through that stitch/space (3 loops on hook) Yarn over hook again and insert hook into the same stitch/space, pull up a loop (same height as the previous one) 3 more times. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on your hook, chain 1 to close the puff stitch.

Gauge: 4 HDC = 1”

Additional notes:

  • If a row/round starts with a Chain 1, that is not counted as a stitch.
  • US terms used throughout
  • When you make a puff stitch, it creates 2 loops on its top. I will refer to these loops as first loop and second loop. The first loop is always the one on the right and the second one is on the left.
  • When you’re about to work in a stitch with a stitch marker in it, just simply take it out, I won’t include a separate note for that
  • Notes are written in (brackets) to help you through the pattern or state someting which can be unclear at first read
  • You can easily resize the earwarmer:

 to make it bigger just add 7 more or a multiple of 7 chains to the staring chain

OR

to make it smaller, simply take 7 or multiples of 7 chains from the starting chain
